To Whom It May Concern,

Can you imagine walking for hours in pain to get to your nearest hospital and when you arrive there you cannot be treated until you hand over payment? This is healthcare in Tanzania.

I am a second-year nursing student at the University of Liverpool. This June I am undertaking a four-week elective placement at the Muhimbili National Hospital in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. This is costing in excess of £2,500. I am writing to you to ask for your help in getting together a donation for the hospital and to provide much needed medical supplies. I do not ask for much but any donation, large or small, would make a tremendous amount of difference to numerous Tanzanians.

I ask for donations of disposable gloves; hand gel; face masks; theatre shoe covers or a monetary contribution to buy basic equipment that we take for granted here in the UK, equipment that can stop infection spreading and protect both the patient and care provider.

I will be placed in both the Emergency Department and in Obstetrics and Gynaecology to understand the difference between our two healthcare systems and to try and have an impact on as many individuals and learn as much as I can during my short stay in the country.

Having previously volunteered in a pilgrimage for Lourdes, it was then that my vocation to be a nurse was solidified. My path was determined. I believe that this experience is the next step along that path.

Your Parish, the Parish I have grown up within, will be endorsed by sharing of your generosity on social media and on the Work the World website, or by completing a presentation for yourselves to demonstrate how your donation has been put to use and how greatly appreciated it will be.

Thank you in advance, you can make a donation by contacting me at the above phone number or email address. I can also provide proof of the volunteering placement if required.

Yours Sincerely,

Lydia Hale

Please find below a letter from Lydia Hale, one of our young parishioners, who is undertaking a placement in Tanzania as part of her nurse training.

Please have a read of her letter and lets see if we can help to raise some funds to buy the items she suggests in her letter.

Also, please pray for her safe return

Dear Fr. Martin and fellow parishioners,

I was overwhelmed with the generosity of the parishioners of St Charles’ last weekend, it will make such a difference to the amount of medical supplies I can take to Tanzania.

I will be attending Mass on Sunday to thank everyone again before returning to university on Monday.

This is a kind reminder to you concerning any more donations forthcoming which you can either give directly to me this weekend or to my Mum at a later date and she will ensure I receive them.

Thank you again for all of your support and prayers over the coming months,

Kindest regards,

Lydia Hale
