Our Food Bank

In 2014 an initiative was started by Rev Pat Brown, a Methodist Minister in Great Harwood, to investigate if it was thought that a food bank should be opened somewhere in Hyndburn North to serve the three towns of Gt. Harwood, Clayton le Moors and Rishton. It would also include Altham.

So Reverend Pat emailed several people and organisations throughout the area to judge if there was an interest in starting up this project. An initial meeting was set up and over 50 interested people attended and we had a presentation by two ladies from the Trussell Trust in Blackburn and people were asked what they thought of joining the Trussell Trust and were asked to go away and think about it.

At the next meeting a gentleman came from Community Solutions who are based in Burnley and gave us a presentation like the one from the previous meeting. In the meeting there was also a representative from Maundy Relief in Accrington who also have a food bank and gave some advice on their operation.

This was a very impressive presentation and the majority were in favour of joining Community Solutions but operating out of Hyndburn. At first we had the idea of three locations to store food but now it has been decided to have just one store and that is to be in Great Harwood.

We could do with a few more drivers to deliver food parcels to peoples homes. We deliver Tuesday’s & Thursday’s and the odd emergency parcel.

It usually takes about an hour to do the deliveries either once or twice a month but if we had more volunteers it would become even less frequent.

In 2016 we have delivered 970 basic food parcels plus around 170 extras parcels to 159 different households in Gt. Harwood, Clayton le Moors, Altham and Rishton.

So can we say a very big thank you to all who helped and to all those who donated all the food and money to buy food.
